Biography

 

Lyudmila Vakar (04.04.1957, Bogushevsk, Senno district, Vitebsk region). Ph.D. in History of Arts. She graduated from the Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after Ilya Repin with a degree in Theory and History of Fine Arts (Leningrad, 1982). From 1991 to 1995 she studied at the graduate school of the Belarusian Academy of Arts. In 1996 she defended her thesis on «Insight Art in Belarus of the 20th Century».

Since 1982, she has been working in Vitebsk Scientific and Methodological Center of Folk Art as a leading methodologist in ethnography and folklore. The artist is engaged in organizational, methodological and research activities in the field of folk crafts, naive art. She organized and implemented the following projects: the exhibition and forum «National and Historical Costume of the Vitebsk Region» (1991), the conference and exhibition «Visionariness of Yazep Drozdovich» (1993), the 1st Republican Pottery Festival «Potter's Wheel-97» (Bocheikovo, Beshenkovichi district, Vitebsk region), national exhibitions and conferences on naive art of Belarus «Insita» (1994, 2000, 2008, 2012, 2016) and other projects. She presented a collection of naive art at the «Insita-97» International Triennial Exhibition in the Slovak Art Gallery (Bratislava, 1997), at the «Festnaive» International Festival of Naive Art (2004, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016) in Moscow. From 1998 to 2001 she was the curator of the project of the international competition of craftsmen in the framework of the International Festival of Arts «Slavic Bazaar in Vitebsk». She held the conferences «Insight Art of Belarus. History. Development Trends» (September 29–30, 2000, Vitebsk Regional Methodological Center of Folk Art), «The Processes of Modernization of Folk Culture and the Experience of Cultural and Educational Institutions of the Vitebsk Region in Preserving Traditions» (May 26–27, 2005, Vitebsk Regional Methodological Center of Folk Art), «Folk Culture of the Vitebsk Region: Exploration, Preservation and Popularization» (May 21, 2010, Vitebsk Regional Methodological Center of Folk Art, Vitebsk Regional Museum of Local Lore), «Primitive and Its Forms in Modern Culture» (May 4–5, 2012, Vitebsk Regional Methodological Center of Folk Art, Vitebsk Regional Museum of Local Lore), «Folk Textiles and Clothing of the Vitebsk Region» (2013, Vitebsk Regional Methodological Center of Folk Art), «History and Contemporary Art Forms of the Primitive» (July 17–18, 2016, Vitebsk Regional Methodological Center of Folk Art).

In 2012, she was awarded the title «The Person of the Year in the Vitebsk Region».

From 1995 to 2015, she taught at Vitebsk State University named after P.M. Masherov. In 1997, she completed her internship at the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Research interests: art culture and visual arts of Belarus.
