Biography

 

Antimonov Leonid (16.12.1934, Kuleshi v-ge, Senno district,Vitebsk region – 16.02.2012, Vitebsk), Belorusian graphic artist, painter and teacher. He graduated from Riga Art Vocational College № 17 (1952), Riga College of Applied Art (1955), Art and Graphic Department of Vitebsk State Pedagogical Institute (1963). Since 1964 he had been working as a teacher of Graphics, Painting, Composition at Art and Graphic Department of VSPI (later Vitebsk State University named after P. Masherov), Associate Professor (1987–2005). The artist was conferred a decoration «Excellent Worker of Public Education» (1984). He did undergo the training at Graphic Department of Academy of the Latvian SSR where he was taught by Professors P. Upitіs and A. Apen (1970), at Department of Graphic Art by Professor V. Sharangovich from BSTAI (1985–1986). He was Professor of Higher Pedagogical School in Zielona Góra (Poland) (1991–1993). Since 1964 the artist took part in art exhibitions. Since 1987 he was a member of Union of Artists.

The artist worked in various graphic techniques (etching, lithography, xylography, monotype, etc.), watercolors, oil painting. Creative experimental work of the artist contributed to the discovery of their own ways of cardboard engraving, plywood engraving, fibreboard engraving, collage way of cardboard engraving and floral type, different ways of monotype, aquatype, scratchboard. He was the author of a number of training appliances: on graphics, monotype, cardboard engraving, floral type.

His major works are: Window (1974), Wildflowers (1975), Still Life. Samovar (1975), Edelweiss (1977), Fern Flower (1978), Mephistopheles (1978), The Tree of Life (1980), Awakening (1982), Wave (1984), Requiem (1984), the triptych The Earth, the Moon, the Sun (1985–1986), Sacrifice (1991), Hot Summer in the Woods (1995), Portrait of Picasso (1999), Reefs (2001), Stream (2009), Mountains (2009), The End of the 20th Century. Requiem (2009), Cranberry (2009); the series of works War Recollections (1976), Ballad About Chile (1976), At Kupala Night (1978), Faces and Masks (1979), The Scarlet Flower (1981), Jazz (1981), Georgia (1982), Disaster (1988–1991), People and Birds (1991), Repressions (1993–1995), Mirage (1995), Life of the Jungle (1997–1998), Seasons (2003), The Breath of Spring (2008–2009), Dedicated to Alexander Pushkin (2009).

The works of the artist are characterized by philosophical interpretation of images, poetic elevation, polystylism, the use of complex techniques and their combinations, associativity of color, the experimental nature of art language.
