Biography

Shutov Gennady (18.07.1939, Zaporozhye, the Ukraine – 03.06.2017, Vitebsk), Belarusion watercolorist, graphic artist. He graduated from Vitebsk Art and Graphic Pedagogical College (1959), Moscow Printing Institute (1970). An Honored Artist of the Republic of Belarus (1996). He worked as a Board Chairman of Vitebsk regional organization of Union of Artists of the BSSR (1976–1986). He was awarded the Order «Badge of Honor» (1986). A member of Belarusian Union of Artists (1967).
The artist worked mainly in watercolors, preferring still lives and landscapes. His early works are romantic, orientated at natural-specific techniques of watercolor painting: «Autumn in the Village» (1956), «Spring Will Soon Be Here» (1962), «Wild Flowers» (1963), «Silence» (1964), «Blue Twilight» (1965), «Windy Day» (1966), «Old Vitebsk» (1967), «Braslavsky Expanse» (1968), «Spring in Old Town» (1969), «Klaipeda» (1970), «Near Old Ladoga» (1971), «Twilight» (1974); the series «Belarusian Still Life» (1970), «Vitebsk» (1972), «Glasswork «Neman» (1973), «Novopolotsk Oil-refining Plant» (1972–75), «My Town» (1972–75), «Belarusian Land» (1977), «New Buildings of Belarus» (1978).

At the end of 1970s some other artistic priorities and original author's style of painting were assigned. Dedicated to Pavel Filonov» (a triptych, 2001), «Extinguished Lamp of Chagall» (2002), «Requiem over Dead Churches of the ХХth century» (2006), «Conversation with Time» (a triptych, 2007); landscape compositions «Pinsk. Franciscan Church» (1986), «Vitebsk. Town Hall» (1991), «Glubokoye. Trinity Church» (1992), «Silhouette of Shcetin» (1992), «Vitebsk 100 years ago» (1995), the series «Zielona Gora» (1981), «The Brest Fortress» (1981), «The Silhouettes of Kiev» (1981), «Architectural Monuments of Vitebsk» (1986–87), «The Gifts of Belarussian Land» (1985–86), «Vitebsk Yards» (2003) and others.

His watercolor compositions are characterized by philosophicity and symbolism, specific transformation of time and space, pictorial and plastic elegance of forms, rhythmic balance, the author's style of artistic language.
