Biography
Gugnin Nikolai (28.11.1946, Novgorod, Russia – 23.10.2022, Vitebsk), a Belarusian art critic, teacher and graphic artist. Nikolai Alexandrovich graduated from Art and Graphic Department of Vitebsk Pedagogical Institute (1970). He was taught by I. Stolyarov, F. Gumen. Today the artist teaches at VSU named after P. Masherov, Ph.D. (1982), Associate Professor, Head of the Department of Fine Arts (2001–2011). Nikolai Gugnin studied the history and the problems of Belarusian book graphics. He is the author of one of the sections in the book «History of Belarusian Art» (T. 5, 1992). Since 1991 Nikolai was a member of Belarusian Union of Artists. The artist lived in Vitebsk.
In 1970 - the beginning of the 1990s. the artist gave preference to bookplates, linocut technique. Since the mid-1990s he has been worked much more actively in watercolors and gouache.
Among the works are: bookplates (more than 70, 1966-89), compositions «April. Pink Dawn» (1970), «Road to Luchesa» (1988), «Autumn» (1994), «Early Snow» (1996); gouaches «Evening on the Obole» (2000), «March Sun» (2005), «Winter Evening. The Polota» (2007), «Warm Evening» (2008), etc.
Traditional realist imagery, open air approach prevail in the creative work of the artist.
Works are kept in Vitebsk Regional Museum.
