Biography
Gumen Felix (28.03.1941, the village of Koltsovo, Amur Region, Russia), a Belarusian artist and watercolor painter. He graduated from the Vitebsk Pedagogical Institute named after S. Kirov in 1962, and from 1965 to 1974 he was a Lecturer there. The artist was taught by I. Stolyarov, V. Dezhits, D. Generalnitsky. Felix Gumen is one of the founders of Vitebsk watercolor school. He is a practitioner of a plein air realist artistic movement. The artist is a member of the Belarusian Union of Artists of the USSR since 1967. He lives in Vitebsk.
F. Gumen works primarily in watercolor. Mainly outdoor landscapes created by the artist are emotionally vibrant. Broad brushwork, rich color, and vivid contrasts of light and shade are inherent in his works.
A Vitebsk theme, its yards and streets, dominates his landscapes. Among the major works are: «Over the Dvina» (1960), «Old Vitebsk» (1970), «Vitebsk» (1972), «Vitebsk Small Yard» (1975), «Vitebsk. City Hall» (1982), «Old Vitebsk. Nighttime» (1995), etc.
Among other works are: «St. Sophia Cathedral in Polotsk» (1967), «Novopolotsk. Sun Over the Town» (1968), «Braslav Land» (1974), «River Luchesa. Spring» (1980), «Ushachy Lakes» (1994), «May Storm is Over» (2008), «Evening in Luzhesno on the Western Dvina River» (2009); still lifes «Still Life with a Herring» (1968), «Flounder» (1970), «Attributes of Art» (1974), «Dandelions» (1982), «Still Life» (1990), «Bellflowers from a Steep Bank» (1995), etc.
His works are kept in the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus, the funds of the Belarusian Union of Artists, the Museum of Modern Art in Minsk, the Vitebsk Regional Museum of Local Hostory, the Mogilev Regional Art Museum named after P. Maslenikov.
The artist's works are characterized by the philosophical interpretation of images, poetic loftiness, plural styles, applying sophisticated techniques and their combinations, color association, experimental artistic language.
