Biography
Kovalev Anatolij (10.05.1926, v-ge Dolgopolye, Gorodok district Vitebsk region – 18.01.2015), Belarusian artist, educator. He graduated from High School of Industrial Art named after V. Mukhina in Leningrad (1958). A teacher at Vitebsk State Pedagogical Institute (since 1963), an associate professor (1977), a professor (1992). Candidate of Art History (1973). Was in charge of the Department of Applied Arts (1965–1976), the Department of Drawing and Fine arts Department (1977–1980). Anatolij Kovalev is a Great Patriotic War veteran. He was decorated with Order of the Red Star, Great Patriotic War Order (I degree). A member of Belarusian Union of Artists (1985). Lived in Vitebsk.
The artist worked mainly in easel painting. He was exploring the theory and practice of design. He combined scientific and educational activities with the creative work. Worked out a logo for Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant, a number of commemorative medals. Anatolij Kovalev wrote three books (two in co-authorship) and about 60 articles on fine art, design and aesthetic education.
Among the works are: compositions «From the Fiery Village» (1986), «Vitebsk Ancientness» (1995), «February of the 43rd in village Oskhoto, Gorodok District» (2003); portraits «Father Minaj» (1979), «Leader of the partisan brigade. The Honorary citizen of Vitebsk N. Sakmarkin» (1997), «Chao Lu – Chinese student» (2005); landscapes «Repin's Places on the Dvina» (1972), «Father's House» (1982), «Repin's Estate in Zdravnevo» (1991), «Late Autumn» (1955), «Kirov Bridge in Vitebsk» (2001), «Museum named after Maslennikov in Mogilev» "(2003), «September Motif in Letsy» (2005); decorative medals, dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the liberation of Vitebsk (1964) and others. The author of the mosaic on the facade of the cinema «Rodina» in Gorodok (1967).
His works were exhibited at international, all-union, republican and regional art exhibitions. His works are kept in the Hermitage Museum, Ulyanovsk Art Museum, Minsk Art Museum, Belorussian Museum of the Great Patriotic War History, Vitebsk Regional Museum of Local History and others.
